Writing Trees Resources

Keep track of the work behind your drafts.

Building something substantial takes more than producing new versions. You make decisions, change direction, protect ideas, revisit old ones and put in hours of work that your drafts alone may never show.

Writing Trees Resources are designed to help you keep track of that development while helping you move your work forward at the same time.

Pre-Week Accountability Tracker

More than a writing planner.

Set your intention before the week gets noisy and start building a record of your effort as your work develops.

Our Pre-Week Accountability Tracker gives you a simple way to decide what matters now, protect your attention and keep evidence of the work happening between your drafts.

Use it to:

  • Track your effort over time without creating a separate progress log.
  • Build supporting evidence alongside your drafts as your work develops.
  • Record what you want to move forward What needs your attention, what’s already working and what can wait.
  • Keep a clearer record of your process when publishers, tutors, supervisors or collaborators ask how your work has developed.
  • Look back at where your effort went not just at the drafts that survived into the final version.
  • Capture new ideas without losing your current focus and return to them when you’re ready.

Seeds and Branches

Plant the idea. Decide what happens to it later.

New ideas don’t always arrive when you’ve got time to follow them. That doesn’t mean you need to lose them.

The second page of our tracker gives you somewhere to plant those seeds as they appear. Date each page, keep it with your developing work and, over time, you can build a booklet of ideas, observations and possible directions that you might otherwise have forgotten.

Some seeds may grow into important branches. Some may need more time or attention. Some may eventually be pruned. By capturing them first, you don’t have to make that decision the moment the idea arrives.

Nurture or prune. Decide later.

Build your drafting portfolio as you go

Your drafts only tell part of the story.

A folder full of drafts can show that your work changed. It doesn’t always show what you were trying to achieve, what you were concentrating on, which ideas appeared, what you chose to leave alone or how your thinking developed between one version and the next.

Keep your completed trackers alongside your drafts and they begin to build a contemporaneous record of your effort, priorities and development without asking you to stop creating and reconstruct your process afterwards.

Over time, your Accountability Trackers and Seeds and Branches pages can become part of a broader drafting portfolio, helping you see more clearly how your work developed.

Already using NARRify®?

If this is useful, NARRify® goes further.

The Pre-Week Accountability Tracker helps you keep track of what is happening around your drafts: your effort, priorities, ideas and development over time.

NARRify® helps you understand what is happening within your work.

A NARRify® Diagnostic Report gives you a structured view of patterns, relationships and areas that might need attention, without writing, rewriting or replacing your judgement.

Used together, your trackers, drafts and NARRify® Diagnostic Reports can give you a fuller record of your work as it develops.
