Some moments are difficult to name. We gave one of them a symbol.
The moment you know something matters, but can’t yet figure out what.
The pressure, the uncertainty, the possibility.
And the sense that something matters before you can see why.
Why Writing Trees exists.
Meaning is the territory we exist to explore.
Writing Trees® is a UK-based meaning company, built through research and development.
We examine how meaning is formed, carried, obscured and understood across creative, professional and educational communication.
Right now, much of our commercial work begins with substantial writing and narrative-led projects, but the questions we explore reach far beyond any single format or discipline.
Our online services are designed for individuals, professionals and organisations wherever you are.
Technology plays a supporting role in our work. Our foundation is research-informed thinking, developed methodologies and human judgement.
We believe understanding comes before intervention.
We help you see it more clearly.
When more than one thing is happening at once.
@#?! is Writing Trees’ symbolic name for a complex, multi-emotional experience that may arise when meaning, pressure, uncertainty and possibility converge.
It gives us shared language for recognising a moment that can otherwise be difficult to describe.
It’s not a diagnosis.
It’s not a promise of breakthrough.
And it’s not a fixed sequence everyone has to move through.
We name the moment so it can be recognised, examined and worked with.
One moment can hold a lot.
Meaning, pressure, uncertainty and possibility can exist together without forming a fixed sequence or prescribed route forward.
MEANING
Something matters.
There’s an idea, intention, question or piece of work worth paying attention to.
PRESSURE
Importance, complexity, expectations or competing demands can make it harder to see the work clearly.
UNCERTAINTY
Questions remain open.
The next step might not be obvious.
POSSIBILITY
More than one direction may still be available.
Not knowing yet doesn’t mean there’s nowhere to go.
Understanding should create possibility.
The purpose of structure isn’t to make everyone think in the same way. The right structure makes complex thinking easier to explore, understand and act upon.
Understanding before intervention.
Designed for different ways of thinking.
People don’t all think, create, process information or communicate in the same way.
Writing Trees doesn’t assume that one structure, route or way of working will suit everyone.
We design our work to make complex information easier to navigate while leaving room for independence, creativity and professional judgement.
Structure should support thinking, not control it.
Where the thinking becomes practical.
NARRify® is the first commercial application of the Writing Trees approach.
It applies Narrative Elevation® to substantial written communication and narrative-led work.
NARRify® helps make what is working, where the structure needs attention, narrative relationships and things you may not have noticed yet more visible.
It does not use AI to rewrite or imitate your voice.
It gives you more information about what may be happening in your work, so you can decide what, if anything, should change.
Every NARRify® Diagnostic Report is reviewed and approved by an authorised Writing Trees reviewer before release and returned within three working days.
For those who want continued structured support, NARRify® Momentum provides one full report and two Micro runs each month, helping you maintain momentum, revisit your work with fresh insight and continue developing it over time.
NARRify® is the first commercial expression of our work.
It’s an important branch, but it’s certainly not the whole tree.
Why NARRify®? Why now?
Technology is changing how we create, communicate and work.
It can accelerate production.
That doesn’t remove the need for human judgement.
We don’t believe you should have to choose between using technology and developing your own abilities. You should be able to do both.
Writing Trees uses technology where it genuinely supports the work.
The work came first.
The framework produced insight.
Technology was developed to support its application.
NARRify® grew from that approach.
It uses technology to support a developed methodology, while judgement, authorship and final decisions stay where they belong: with people.
We aren’t building technology for its own sake.
We are interested in what technology can support without losing sight of the people creating, receiving and responding to the work.
Built through collaboration.
Writing Trees was founded by Michelle Britton, but it hasn’t grown in isolation.
Writers, creative practitioners, publishing and education professionals, technical contributors, testers and other specialists have all helped shape its development.
Our work is strengthened through collaboration with people whose experience spans publishing, education, technology, media, professional communication and the creative industries.
Writing Trees is UK-based, while its development has been informed by professional perspectives and real-world experience from a growing international network.
As our research and development evolves, so does that network.
Some contributors support individual projects.
Some work with us over longer periods.
Some may become part of Writing Trees as the company grows.
Not every contributor is publicly identified.
Where people or organisations are named, we do so with their permission.
Meaningful work deserves more than correction.
It deserves understanding.
Writing Trees is developing a connected collection of frameworks, professional services and responsibly designed tools that help people examine, develop and communicate meaning.
We don’t need every future branch to be visible today.
We need to understand what’s worth growing next.
Human judgement remains central because the people creating, receiving and responding to work are part of how meaning is formed and understood.
Meaning continues to develop.
